About Our Canvases

Our canvases are created using a method know as 'gicleé' printing.
Gicleé (ghee-clay) is a coined art term. It is a French word which literally means 'to spit' or 'spray'. Gicleé prints are produced using very sophisticated inkjet technology that can produce microscopic droplets of coloured inks that are sprayed onto the canvas. The special inks combine to produce a continuous tone of high quality colour output that doesn't suffer from the dot pattern effects associated with traditional, offset lithography printing (as used in printing books and magazines).

We use the latest wide format digital gicleé printers from Epson that utilise special ultrachrome inks. These cutting edge inks produce superb, bright colours and are lightfast for many years.

We print our artwork and images onto the highest quality canvas. We use a smooth textured, 100% cotton luxurious artist-grade canvas that has been specifically developed for creating museum and art gallery quality gicleé prints.

Once the ink has dried we apply a special micro fine laminate film in our state of the art hot press machine.

Once the film is applied the canvas will be water resistant meaning you can wipe your canvas clean at any time without fear of ruining your beautiful print. The film also provides a scratch resistant coating and contains a UV filter which will prevent fading even in direct sunlight for many years.

We then hand stretch the print over a chunky solid wooden frame. These specially constructed frames are made up using 'stretcher bars'. These stretcher bars are made from extra strong, solid, kiln dried European pine, which ensures they will not warp or shrink.

The specially machined corner joints allow the frame to be 'stretched' by tapping small wooden wedges into them. This means that if over time your canvas print loses its tautness it can be tightened up easily.

The canvas corners are trimmed flush and folded neatly, then we securely fix the canvas on the rear by hand using staples. Once fully fixed we tap in the wooden corner wedges to make the canvas taut, and then neatly cover all the staples on the rear with smooth framers tape.

Beware !!

1.Many other canvas art manufacturers simply wrap their prints over cheap, fixed frames, not stretcher bars. Wood and canvas are natural materials that can expand and shrink under different environmental conditions (e.g. in a centrally heated house or an air-conditioned office). After a while canvas art may lose their tautness due to the frame shrinking or the canvas giving slightly. Unless the canvas print is mounted on a proper stretcher frame you will not be able to re-tighten it and it will take on a baggy appearance.

2.  Many other canvas art manufacturers do not use corner wedges which like using cheap frames will cause the canvas to be slack and baggy very quickly.

3. Most other canvas art manufacturers do not coat their canvases with micro fine laminate due to the very high cost of the equipment required to carry out this process. Even the cleanest homes and offices attract a little dust with our film they can be wiped clean. We all have accidents, you pop open a bottle of champagne and it goes every where and straight over your beautiful canvas and now its ruined, with our film you wipe it clean and no damage is done you only cry over the wasted champagne

4. Many other canvas art manufacturers do not understand how important the finish of your canvas is. Imagine hanging your canvas and everything looks beautiful on the front then you realise the corners are bulky and folded like an envelope and very unsightly you now need to decide do you really want to hang it on your wall. With our corners we take great care to ensure the corners are as invisible as possible and use our special techniques to give you that perfect finish
